User Datagram Protocol (UDP) is one of the main transport protocols used in IP networks. It corresponds to Layer 4 in the OSI 7-layer model of the networking stack.  It is a “stateless” or “connectionless” protocol which means that features such as retransmission and flow control, if desired, must be implemented at a higher layer in the stack (e.g., application layer).
