Cache server located in front of the origin servers in order to enhance their capabilities and offer content to an increasing number of origin access points without increasing the number of origin servers. The downstream CDN elements will fetch the object from the shield cache rather than pulling from the origin directly. It is basically an extra layer of caching to limit load on the origin and may also provide security and TCP aggregation benefits.
